Victorian Scottish plaid brooches, heavily popularised during the 19th century by Queen Victorias affinity for Balmoral, reflect the romantic revival of Celtic and Highland traditions in British jewellery.

These pieces typically utilise solid sterling silver, often featuring hand-engraved interlace or knotwork motifs, and are traditionally set with foil-backed citrines, cairngorms, or locally sourced Scottish agates.

Authentication relies on examining the hallmarks for assay office stamps and date letters, evaluating the weight and construction of the silver work, and checking for period-correct pin mechanisms such as C-clasps and hinged pins.

While traditionally pinned to tartan shawls, plaids, or heavy knit lapels, these pieces can also be mounted in small shadow box frames to display as decorative objects of historic interest.

Antique silver should be stored in a dry environment away from direct sunlight, cleaned gently with a specialist microfibre cloth to preserve natural patina, and kept separate from harder gemstones to prevent scratching.
