Antique Vanity-bag, Shahsevan Tribes of Moghan, Azerbaijan.

19th century
Description

This beautiful little vanity-bag - 'chanteh' in Persian - was woven by Shahsevan nomads in Azerbaijan around the end of the 19th century. The face of the bag is woven in a technique known as overlay/underlay brocade on a balanced weave ground. The back has a madder-red plain-weave ground with the overlay/underlay technique in horizontal bands.

Apart from some damage in the lower right base of the bag, which has had some restoration, the wear was no doubt caused by continual use in nomadic life. Otherwise this beautiful little bag is in very good, original condition.

This is an exceptional small vanity-bag which would grace any collection, even allowing for the slight wear and I have priced it fairly because of the damage to the back.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An ayna torba is a traditional hand-woven pouch produced by nomadic Shahsevan tribes in the Caucasus and north-west Persia, historically created to store personal items, vanity accessories, or small mirrors.

These pouches are typically woven using hand-spun wool yarns, incorporating techniques such as flatweave tapestry, extra-weft soumak wrapping, and braided drawstrings.

Authentic examples exhibit natural dye colour variations, hand-spun wool construction, intricate geometric diamond or latch-hook motifs, and traditional woven selvedges specific to Azerbaijani nomadic weavers.

These woven textiles can be mounted inside a custom shadow-box frame, displayed flat on a surface as a decorative accents, or integrated into a gallery wall of historic art.

Keep the wool textile away from direct sunlight and damp environments, vacuum gently on a low setting using a protective mesh screen, and consult a professional conservator for specialised washing.
