Shell motifs have been utilised in decorative arts and silverware since the Renaissance and Baroque periods, gaining renewed popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras for serving sweetmeats, nuts, or small appetisers.

These pieces are typically crafted from sterling silver, often formed using traditional silversmithing techniques such as stamping, repousse, or casting, finished with a central handle.

Authenticity is determined by examining official hallmarks stamped into the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark indicating sterling silver, a date letter, and an assay office mark.

It can be utilised as a functional centrepiece on a dining table, placed on a coffee table as a catch-all tray, or displayed on a sideboard to add metallic contrast and classic elegance to contemporary spaces.

Sterling silver should be cleaned periodically using a non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to remove tarnish, and stored in a dry environment away from direct sunlight.
