Gents Silver 1940s Smiths Wrist Watch

1920 - 1940
Sold 1 December 2025 · The Vintage Wrist Watch Company
This “Gents Silver 1940s Smiths Wrist Watch” found a buyer.

It was listed by The Vintage Wrist Watch Company. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Gents silver 1940s Smiths wrist watch.

The watch has a signed 15-jewel hand-winding movement, calibre b454, which is working nicely.

The watch measures 30mm wide excluding the winding crown, and 30mm high excluding the lugs. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case back for Birmingham 1946, with a case maker’s mark for Aaron Dennison, a Birmingham based case maker and supplier to various watch manufacturers.

The back of the watch has a beautiful long service inscription from Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd which marks 25 years’ service. The inscription has a date of 1942.

The four year discrepancy in dates is because the manufacture of English watches ceased during the second World War and was resumed after the War had ended.

The lens is in good condition (some natural light reflection showing in the photos).

The signed silvered dial is in its original finish with original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track.

A later leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Declaration

Dealers Notes

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Wristwatches from the 1940s typically feature clean, functional dial layouts influenced by wartime and post-war utilitarian design, often housed in smaller cases with Arabic numerals and sub-seconds dials.

Mid-century watches commonly utilised sterling silver, gold-plated or rolled gold cases, stainless steel backs, acrylic crystals, and genuine leather straps.

Authenticity is verified by examining the movement hallmarks, signature branding on the dial, case makers marks, and ensuring the mechanical movement matches the production period.

A vintage wristwatch adds understated sophistication to contemporary tailoring or smart-casual attire, serving as a subtle focal point when paired with minimalist accessories.

Mechanical watches require regular servicing by a professional horologist, protection from moisture and extreme magnetic fields, and careful manual winding if they are non-automatic.
