Originating in the Scottish Highlands, the quaich is a traditional two-handled drinking vessel historically used for offering a welcoming drink, often known as the cup of friendship.

Traditional early quaichs were carved from wood, staved like miniature casks, or fashioned from horn. Later examples from the Georgian and Victorian eras were predominantly crafted from sterling silver using hand-raising and soldering techniques.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive silver cloth and specialist polish to preserve the patina, and stored in a dry environment away from direct sunlight.

A silver quaich can be utilised as a sophisticated decorative accent on a coffee table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece, reflecting light and adding a touch of historical metalwork to modern schemes.

Authentic pieces typically bear clear hallmarks including a makers mark, a standard mark indicating sterling silver, a duty mark where applicable, and a date letter corresponding to the assay office records of the period.
