Antique Mahogany Bookcase Cupboard - George IV

19th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A George IV, Regency period, mahogany cupboard bookcase. This elegant piece has an outswept pediment over a pair of Gothic arched astragal glazed doors, behind which are three full-width shelves and a baize-lined base. The cupboard section has a reeded edge, below which is a full-length frieze drawer with brass lion's head ring pull handles. Below the drawer is a double-door cupboard with two baize-lined shelves. Raised on a base with reeded edging and bracket feet.

The overall condition is very good with age-related wear and tear. We have noted a small scuff mark to the right-hand side of the top section and some light sun fading to the doors but otherwise a delightfully proportioned piece of Regency furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced between 1820 and 1830, George IV bookcase cupboards feature classical Regency proportions, mahogany timber construction, upper glazed doors with decorative astragal glazing, and lower panelled storage cupboards.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from solid and veneered mahogany, featuring hand-blown glass panes, brass hardware such as lion mask handles, and pine or oak internal secondary timbers.

Authentic George IV pieces exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joints, original hand-cut glass panes, period-correct brass drop handles, and evidence of hand-planed timber surfaces on cabinet backs and drawer linings.

Positioning a tall glazed cabinet against a neutral wall allows the warm mahogany tones to anchor a contemporary living space, home office, or dining room while providing organised display for ceramics or literature.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or finish fading.
