A rare English Georgian antique sterling silver and shagreen spectacles or glasses case. The silver is unmarked but tests as high grade silver. I would date it to c1800. It has been superbly made and still has its original retail label inside the lid relating to an Opticians to the King at the High St Portsmouth. It is in super condition being free from dings splits and repairs. It measures over 5 inches (13.2cm) tall by 1.75 inches (4.4cm) across by almost 1 inch (2cm) wide and weighs 46 grams. A superbly designed rare piece.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Shagreen is traditionally prepared shark or ray skin characterised by a distinctive granular surface texture. It gained widespread popularity in luxury decorative arts and small accessories during the Georgian and Art Deco periods.

These cases were typically constructed using a rigid wood or papier-mache core, which was then covered in dyed sharkskin or ray skin and reinforced with sterling silver mounts, hinges, and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature natural pebble grain patterns with irregular calcium deposits characteristic of elasmobranch skin, combined with period-appropriate hand-cut silver pins, hinges, and interior silk or velvet linings.

Small luxury antiques like shagreen cases work exceptionally well when displayed on desks, within glass cabinets, or styled on top of coffee table books to add texture and historical interest to a room.

Shagreen should be kept away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to prevent the hide from drying out or shrinking. Clean gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical polishes or water.
