Trowel-shaped bookmarks gained popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often crafted as novelty items for readers and scholars. These miniatures mirrored full-sized masonry trowels, sometimes humorously associated with laying the groundwork for reading.

They were typically constructed from sterling silver, featuring hallmarks indicating the assay office, maker, and year of production. Handles were frequently fashioned from decorative hardstones such as banded agate, carnelian, or mother-of-pearl.

Authenticity is verified by checking for legible makers marks and standard sterling silver hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal blade. The natural inclusions, weight, and cool touch of genuine banded agate also distinguish vintage pieces from modern replicas.

This piece can be displayed resting on an open volume atop a coffee table, bookshelf, or office desk as part of a curated tablescape. Its polished silver and warm stone add a touch of historical craftsmanship to contemporary study spaces.

Store the item in a dry environment and gently clean the silver using a specialist microfibre cloth to avoid abrasive scratching on the stone handle. Harsh chemical dips should be avoided, particularly where the metal meets the banded agate adhesive.
