Description

A French 18 karat (18K) yellow gold, diamond and ruby love charm pendant with a rebus spelling out "Plus qu'hier, moins que demain" ("More than yesterday, less than tomorrow") - a line taken from the love poem written by Rosemonde Gerard to her husband (the author of Cyrano) in 1889.

The word "plus" is symbolised by a plus sign set with five rose-cut white diamonds with a total approximate weight of 0.05 carats, and the word "moins" by a minus sign set with three baguette-cut synthetic rubies with a total carat weight of approximately 0.09 carats.

This is an original example of the tokens created by Alphonse Augis in 1907 in response to the poem, signed A. Augis with a "crepe de chine" textured background and floral and laurel wreath border to indicate the triumph of love. The patent mark "DEPOSE" to the reverse along with the A. Augis signature indicates that this is an early example of these love tokens.

Signed A. Augis, stamped with the eagle's head for 18K gold and French manufacture and Augis' maker's mark.
