All within a shaped underglaze cobalt blue border, decorated with elaborate gilt scrollwork.

Underglaze blue crossed swords mark to the reverse.

During the 19th century, the Meissen manufactory frequently drew inspiration from 18th-century French Rococo artists, particularly Francois Boucher. Craftsmen adapted Bouchers pastoral fete galante scenes onto porcelain surfaces, combining them with rich cobalt blue grounds and heavy gilding to satisfy Victorian demand for historical revival styles.

These pieces were crafted from high-fired hard-paste porcelain. The rich outer border was achieved using cobalt oxide applied under or over the glaze, while the central pastoral scenes were hand-painted using delicate enamel pigments. The ornate geometric borders were finished with mercury gilding, which was fired and burnished.

Authentic Meissen porcelain features the iconic underglaze blue crossed swords mark on the underside. Nineteenth-century examples display precise hand painting, high-quality heavy gilding, and a distinct bright white, hard-paste porcelain body without dark inclusions or soft-paste porosity.
