A ribbon threader, often termed a bodkin, is a small nineteenth-century sewing implement designed specifically to thread ribbons, elastics, or tapes through hems, casings, and lacings in garments and undergarments.

These implements were typically crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, often featuring decorative handles embellished with hardstones such as Scottish agate, carnelian, or bloodstone, and manufactured using traditional silversmithing techniques including casting, chasing, and stone-setting.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate hallmarks or makers marks, genuine hand-cut or polished natural stones, and subtle wear patterns consistent with nineteenth-century manufacture rather than modern machine production.

These small collectables can be housed in glass display domes, arranged inside shallow tabletop display cases, or curated alongside vintage books and writing accessories to add historical interest to a study or living area.

Preservation requires storing items in a dry, tarnish-inhibiting environment, avoiding harsh chemical silver dips that can damage softer inlaid stones like agate, and gently dusting surfaces with a soft microfibre cloth.
