FAQs

The Corinthian column style features ornate capitals decorated with acanthus leaves, inspired by classical Greek and Roman architecture, which gained immense popularity in British metalwork during the 19th century.

These items are typically constructed from a base metal such as copper, brass, or Britannia metal, which is then coated with a layer of silver using Sheffield plating or early electroplating techniques, often weighted internally with resin or pitch for stability.

Authenticity is determined by examining makers marks, weighted felt bases, the weight-to-size ratio, and the presence of subtle wear patterns or copper show-through where the silver plating has thinned over generations of polishing.

They can be integrated into contemporary spaces by placing them as focal points on dining tables, mantels, or sideboards to introduce classical symmetry, metallic reflection, and textural contrast against modern minimalist surfaces.

Preservation requires regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and occasional cleaning with a non-abrasive, high-quality silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the historic plating.
