For Sale by M Lees and Sons
Description

Fine quality mid C19th ormolu-mounted burr and figured Circassian walnut kidney-shaped writing table or ‘bureau-plat’.

Cross-banded and inlaid with satinwood and kingwood, the top retaining its original inset shaped scarlet Morocco leather writing surface with gilt and ‘blind’ tooled edge . The shapely cabriole-style legs each with an elaborate brightly gilded ormolu cast bronze rococo-style full-length mount onto integral sabot feet . The friezes of serpentine outline , the front central frieze section having a ‘concealed’ mahogany-lined full-length drawer. The shaped friezes all with kingwood cross-banding .

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a French-style flat writing table originating in the 18th century, typically featuring an inset writing surface. Kidney-shaped variants incorporate a concave front curve designed to allow the user easier reach across the desktop.

Mid-19th-century examples were frequently constructed using figured walnut or burr walnut veneers laid over a solid hardwood framework, finished with cast gilt-bronze ormolu mounts and a leather writing surface.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, natural age-related oxidisation on the underside, cast metal mounts with precise chasing, and natural wear patterns on the leg sabots.

Place the table in a window alcove or study space alongside minimalist modern seating to highlight the contrast between historical curves and clean contemporary architecture.

Dust surfaces using a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to wood surfaces while avoiding abrasive cleaners that could damage the gilding on metal mounts.
