Antique Turkish Bandirma rug of prayer niche design with a blue ground.
Circa 1900.
The design is based on a prayer rugs, as found in 17th and 18th century Ottoman rugs.

The following is quoted from Britannica, 'Panderma (now Bandirma), a town in Turkey on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmora, usually as imitations of Ghiordes prayer-rug designs. The enterprise was begun early in the 20th century, perhaps with weavers from Ghiordes, though it is usually described as an Armenian establishment'.

The rug has a blue field with s central floral column leading to the mihrab, the blue field is edged with flowering carnations. The border is very well drawn and of a classic floral design.
The rug is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and good pile. The rug is of fine weave.
The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display, the rug is suitable for light domestic use or would make a great wall hanging.
