Antique Caucasian Gendje Kazak Prayer Rug with Scarce Blue Ground, Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

Size: 5ft 9in x 2ft 11in (176 x 90cm).

Antique Caucasian Gendje Kazak prayer rug with floral lattice on a dark indigo blue ground.

Circa 1890.

This is a good example of a very scarce group of prayer rugs attributed to Gendje, in the central southern Caucasus. These rugs have a floral lattice design on a dark indigo blue ground. The border is of traditional form with the bold colour palette associated with this group of rugs. An interesting example with a very subtle arrangement to the field. I would consider this to be a very scarce prayer rug.

The rug has very slight even wear and good full pile.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

Stock Number: H-563.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian rugs from the Gendje and Kazak districts are traditional tribal textiles woven in the Caucasus during the nineteenth century. They are recognised for their bold geometric patterns, primary natural dyes, and architectural motifs such as the mihrab prayer arch.

These rugs were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the structural warp and weft foundations. Native vegetable and mineral dyes were utilised to produce rich, durable tones including indigo blue, madder red, and saffron yellow.

Authentic period pieces feature stylized prayer arches (mihrabs), geometric lattice designs, hand-bound selvedges, and subtle colour variations known as abrash, which reflect traditional nomadic loom production.

An antique Caucasian rug provides colour and architectural structure when laid over natural timber or stone flooring. It acts as an anchor in modern minimalist rooms, dark academia study spaces, or traditional English country interiors.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotating brush, rotate the carpet annually to equalise wear, and arrange for professional hand-washing by a specialist textile conservator when required.
