Novelty bookmarks in precious metals gained popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as literacy rates increased and reading became a widespread leisure activity, leading silversmiths to produce imaginative designs shaped like swords, daggers, and everyday objects.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as stamping, casting, and hand-engraving, often featuring traditional hallmarks that indicate the assay office, standard of silver, and year of manufacture.

Authenticity is determined by examining the presence and clarity of British hallmark stamps, the weight and gauge of the silver, signs of genuine period wear, and the construction methods consistent with historical manufacturing eras.

As a small decorative antique, it can be displayed on top of a stack of leather-bound books on a coffee table, desk, or open bookshelf to add a touch of historical curiosity and refined detail to a study or living space.

Antique silver should be stored in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and humidity, and cleaned infrequently using a soft, non-abrasive microfibre cloth designed specifically for silver to avoid damaging the patina and fine details.
