Dutch Delftware originated in the city of Delft in the Netherlands during the 17th century as a European earthenware imitation of imported Chinese porcelain, renowned for its tin-glazed blue and white decoration.

Traditional Delft plates are crafted from buff-coloured clay covered with an opacifying white tin glaze, onto which cobalt blue designs were hand-painted before a final clear lead glaze was applied and fired.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit irregular craquelure in the glaze, minor edge frit chips revealing the softer earthenware body underneath, and often hand-painted makers marks or numbers on the unglazed foot rim.

These pieces can be mounted on a wall as decorative art using appropriate plate hangers or displayed upright on a dresser or mantelpiece to introduce classic pattern and historic character to a room.

Antique Delftware should be kept away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, dusted gently with a soft dry cloth, and never washed in a dishwasher or submerged in water due to the fragility of the porous earthenware body.
