Silver bonbon and sweetmeat baskets gained popularity in the late 17th and 18th centuries as refined tableware items used to serve confectionery, sugar plums, and delicate sweets during formal dining occasions.

These pieces are typically crafted from sterling or hallmarked silver, often utilizing traditional silversmithing techniques such as piercing, repousse, casting, and hand-woven wirework to simulate natural wicker baskets.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarks for maker marks, assay office symbols, and date letters, alongside observing natural wear patterns, patina, and hand-finished construction details characteristic of period manufacturing.

These versatile decorative objects can be utilized on coffee tables, sideboards, or open shelving as polished accent pieces, contrasting effectively against matte textures and neutral modern palettes.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with specialized non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth only when necessary, avoiding harsh dips that can strip historical patina, and storing them in low-humidity environments.
