This large nineteenth-century Victorian fire screen is rendered in dark brown mahogany with a clear glass panel held within an elegantly curved frame. The construction incorporates carved acorn finials atop turned side columns, a decorative scrolled crest carving at the top, shaped mouldings along the lower frame rail, and ornate carving upon the splayed trestle feet. Measuring 124 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, the piece stands freely on the floor. Positioned before a fireplace hearth, this fire screen protects a room from radiant heat while maintaining an open visual feel through its transparent pane. The traditional dark timber finish and Victorian styling suit period interiors, country houses, or traditional studies, complementing existing dark wood furniture and hearth accessories without blocking light or obstructing views of the fireplace.

Fire screens were designed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to protect seated individuals from direct radiant heat from open hearths while allowing light and warmth to circulate into the living space.

Victorian examples commonly featured dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, fitted with clear glass, embroidered needlepoint panels, or stained glass set within a joinery-built frame.

Authentic period pieces display traditional construction methods such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, natural patination on the turned wooden supports, and hand-carved cresting or finial details.

Position the screen directly on a fireplace hearth in front of an unlit or disused grate, or place it within an empty alcove as a carved sculptural feature.

Dust the timber framework regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish annually, while cleaning glass panels with a microfibre cloth and mild cleaner to avoid touching the wood polish.
