A sovereign case is a small, pocket-sized container traditionally used during the 19th and early 20th centuries to securely carry gold sovereign and half-sovereign coins.

They were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, often featuring internal spring-loaded mechanisms to hold coins in place, and frequently decorated with engine-turned engraving or chased motifs.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining official British hallmark stamps on the interior, which indicate the metal purity, assay office, and date letter of manufacture.

These small pieces are ideal for display inside glass-topped coffee table vitrines, within traditional bookshelves, or as part of a curated collection on a desk or mantelpiece.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently with a soft microfibre cloth designed for silver to preserve the natural patina and avoid damaging delicate mechanical hinges or hallmarks.
