Filigree is an intricate metalwork technique involving fine twisted threads soldered together to create openwork designs, frequently utilised in Victorian, Edwardian, and mid-century periods.

These items typically consist of a silver base metal that has been coated with a thin layer of gold, often complemented by gemstones and seed pearls.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-soldered wirework, traditional clasp mechanisms such as a C-clasp or early safety catch, and appropriate metal hallmarks.

Vintage brooches can be pinned to coat lapels, used to fasten scarves, or worn on collars to add textural contrast to modern outfits.

Items should be gently wiped with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips or ultrasonic cleaners which can damage the delicate gilt finish and pearls.
