Late 19th-century Pierced Brass Pendant Light

19th century
Description

Unusual pierced brass pendant light, very finely hand-worked. We would be happy to polish this light if requested. I think it looks quite good without being polished. I’ve dated it to the late 19th century; I think this because you can see the weld marks down the piece—see photographs. This piece comes with a large bayonet bulb holder, B22.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th century, European interest in Middle Eastern and South Asian decorative arts surged, leading to the popularity of Moorish Revival and Anglo-Indian style metalwork. Pierced brass lanterns were produced using hand-punched techniques to create intricate geometric patterns that diffused light dramatically.

These fixtures were primarily crafted from spun or hammered brass sheets that were hand-pierced or stamped with geometric and floral filigree. The suspension chains and decorative finials were also cast or turned from solid brass or copper alloys.

Authentic period pieces display irregular hand-punched piercings rather than modern uniform laser cuts, alongside hand-soldered seams. Natural surface oxidisation, soft wear to the brass, and period-appropriate chain links further indicate age.

A pierced brass pendant fixture serves as a central focal point in hallways, dining areas, or alcoves. When illuminated, the reticulated metal casts geometric shadows onto surrounding walls, creating ambient texture in contemporary or eclectic settings.

Remove surface dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to reach inside the pierced details. Avoid aggressive chemical brass polishes or water immersion, as these can strip historical surface patina and damage internal wiring.
