Mark Seabrook Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
...it has also gained a very good colour...these collectable items, were used as the name suggests, to place a lighted wax taper or later a match in the finial and make your way to bed...the taper / match would light your darkened way.....the matches were kept in the main body, just in case the taper or match was blown out ....in excellent condition and coming from a very good collection.
