During the Victorian era, motifs symbolising good luck, protection, and prosperity gained immense popularity, with the horseshoe being a prominent design element in both fine and sentimental jewellery.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver or gold, frequently featuring applied metalwork details, pins made from base metals for durability, and occasionally integrated gemstones or paste stones.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmark stamps, the style of the C-clasp or tubed hinge pin fittings, hand-fabricated construction methods, and natural oxidisation appropriate for nineteenth-century silver.

An antique brooch can be pinned to lapels, scarves, hats, or heavy knitwear as a focal statement piece, mixing historical elements with contemporary attire.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly with a soft microfibre cloth to preserve the natural patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage historic metal finishes and secure settings.
