Description

A superb antique burr walnut Carlton House desk, made in England and dating from around the 1890-1910 period.

This is of outstanding quality with many lovely features. It is a great size, with lots of storage space in the curved upper section and lower drawers. It stands on tapered legs with brass casters, there is an inset leather writing surface which slides out to increase the work space. There is a pierced brass upper gallery and high quality brass handles. Inside the upper section on either end, there are secret hidden doors to additional compartments inside, hard to see in the images. This has a finished back, and looks amazing from all angles.

The burr walnut grain patterns and colour tones are stunning, we have had this re-polished and the condition is excellent for its age.

A Carlton House desk is a specific type of writing table featuring a curved superstructure fitted with small drawers and compartments, originally designed for the Prince of Wales at Carlton House in the late 18th century.

These desks are typically constructed from a solid secondary timber such as mahogany or pine, veneered with highly figured decorative woods like burr walnut, and frequently feature leather writing surfaces and brass hardware.

Authentication involves examining the hand-cut dovetailing on the drawers, the quality of the veneer work, traditional timber shrinkage, and hand-forged or cast brass fixings consistent with the period of manufacture.

This piece works effectively as a statement writing table in a home study or living room, pairing well with contemporary minimalist seating to create a balanced contrast between old and new design elements.

Preservation requires keeping the wooden surfaces away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying periodic coats of high-grade beeswax, and avoiding synthetic cleaning chemicals on the timber and leather.
