This Victorian Davenport writing desk adopts the classic Gentleman's Library style, constructed from burr walnut with a warm brown timber colour. A brass three-quarter gallery tops the sloping desk, which is fitted with a red leather inset. The front rests on substantial carved scroll supports above turned feet, while decorative mouldings frame the side panels. The piece measures 87 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, offering a compact writing solution for a home study, library, or traditional bedroom setting. Opening the lined slope reveals an internal storage compartment with small drawers, complemented by a side panel that opens to four further drawers. The figured grain of the burr walnut veneer shows rich natural figuring across every surface, contrasting with the warm red of the writing hide and the polished brasswork of the gallery. This practical antique provides a dedicated writing space and enclosed stationery storage, well-suited for daily use in a period or contemporary interior.

FAQs

A Davenport desk is a compact, sloping-front writing desk originally designed in the late 18th century, featuring a lift-top writing surface and side drawers or cupboards.

Victorian Davenports were frequently constructed using fine cabinet woods such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often featuring hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass gallery rails, and dovetailed drawers.

Authentic Victorian examples typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware or locks, authentic wear on the leather writing inset, and distinctive figurings like burr walnut veneers.

A Davenport desk works well as an occasional writing station in a hallway, bedroom alcove, or study, paired with contemporary lighting or understated artwork to complement the timber grain.

To preserve burr walnut, keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to protect the veneer.
