FAQs

Victorian oil lamps became widespread during the 19th century as a primary source of indoor illumination before the widespread adoption of electric lighting, often featuring ornate glass and brass components.

These lamps typically combine blown or pressed glass reservoirs and stems with brass burners, collars, and sometimes weighted metal bases for stability.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-painted enamel details, maker marks on the brass burner mechanisms, and minor surface wear consistent with age and previous use.

They can be displayed unadapted as decorative sculptural objects on sideboards or mantels, or professionally converted with electrical fittings for functional tabletop lighting.

Clean glass surfaces gently with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical abrasives on painted sections, and polish brass components only with specialised non-abrasive metal cleaners.
