Pierced or punched tin lanterns, often called thousand eyes lanterns, date back to the 18th and 19th centuries when they were used for lighting homes and pathways. Artisans used small chisels and awls to puncture patterns into sheet metal, allowing candlelight to project through the perforations.

These pieces were typically constructed from sheets of tinned iron or plain tinplate. The metal was hand-cut, folded, soldered, and meticulously pierced by hand to create decorative motifs before being fitted with a hinged door and a carrying handle.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-punched holes with raised burrs on the reverse side, handmade soldering, genuine oxidation, and wear consistent with age. Modern reproductions often feature machine-punched holes that lack the irregular charm and patination of 19th-century craftsmanship.

This piece adds texture and historical contrast to contemporary spaces when placed on a mantelpiece, shelf, or sideboard. The perforated metal casts intricate patterns of light, making it an effective accent piece for ambient evening lighting.

Preservation requires keeping the object in a dry environment to prevent active corrosion. Dust gently with a soft brush and avoid using water, harsh chemical cleaners, or aggressive polishes that could strip away the historical patina.
