Letter openers and page turners became popular desk accessories during the 18th and 19th centuries as correspondence and bound books became widespread among the middle and upper classes.

Common materials include sterling silver, ivory, bone, horn, mother-of-pearl, and various base metals, often featuring cast or hand-carved decorative handles.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining hallmarks stamped into the metal, which indicate the maker, standard of silver purity, assay office, and year of manufacture.

These small objects add character and a sense of history when displayed on home office desks, bookshelves, or coffee tables as functional conversation pieces.

Silver should be cleaned periodically using a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to maintain its finish and prevent tarnish accumulation.
