The Georgian period spans the reigns of the first four British monarchs named George, from 1714 to 1830, and is characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly utilised solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, often incorporating secondary timbers such as oak or pine for internal carcases, drawer linings, and structural framing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, older glass panes with subtle imperfections, patination consistent with age, and traditional hand-planed surfaces rather than modern machine tooling.

Pairing dark wood period furniture with neutral, textured walls and modern minimalist lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition that highlights the rich grain and craftsmanship of the timber.

Maintain a stable indoor humidity and temperature away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber warping or cracking, and treat the wood periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
