Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ware produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari. Developed in the seventeenth century, it is characterised by rich underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red decoration, frequently highlighted with gold.

Reticulated Imari porcelain is crafted from fine kaolin clay, featuring hand-cut openwork lattice patterns pierced into the unfired clay body. The piece undergoes an initial firing, followed by underglaze cobalt blue application, high-heat glaze firing, and subsequent overglaze enamelling and gilding.

Authentic antique Imari pieces display subtle variations in hand-painted decoration, slight glaze imperfections near the foot rim, and light wear to hand-applied gilding. Older examples exhibit cobalt blue decoration beneath the glaze layer alongside hand-enamelled iron-red motifs.
