Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Travelling cutlery sets were personal dining utensils crafted for individuals to carry while travelling, hunting, or dining away from home during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

These sets typically feature hand-forged steel blades and tines, silver or brass mounts, inlaid horn or bone handles, and a fitted, hand-tooled leather sheath.

Authentic pieces often exhibit maker stamps on the steel blades, hand-tooled geometric patterns on the leather sheath, hand-engraved silver work, and natural age-related patina on metals and horn.

Objects of this nature are frequently styled within a glass cabinet of curiosities, framed inside a custom shadow box, or arranged flat on a library shelf or desk display tray.

Keep steel components dry and lightly oiled to prevent oxidation, avoid soaking horn or organic handles in water, and store the leather sheath in a climate-controlled space away from direct heat.
