FAQs

Japanese metalwork has a centuries-old tradition, reaching a peak of international acclaim during the Meiji period (1868-1912) when skilled artisans combined traditional casting techniques with intricate surface inlays.

These pieces are typically crafted using traditional copper-alloy casting methods, often enhanced with nunome-zogan (overlay) or nunome-gane techniques utilising gold, silver, and copper to create pictorial motifs.

Authentic pieces often feature characteristic patination, hand-finished chasing, maker signatures or foundry marks on the base, and high-relief or inlaid metalwork typical of historical artisan guilds.

Display them as focal points on a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard, allowing their rich metallic patina and organic floral motifs to contrast against minimalist modern furnishings.

Maintain antique bronze by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical polishes, water, or abrasive cleaners which can strip the historical patina and damage delicate surface inlays.
