Antique Georgian/victorian Garnet Riviere Necklace 9k Gold - Early 19th C.

19th century
Description

We are delighted to offer this magnificent antique late Georgian/early Victorian 9ct gold garnet riviere necklace made in the early 19th c.

Aptly named and evident from its etymology (riviere meaning river in French), this necklace cascades and flows around the wearer's neck with utmost grace, elegance and opulence. The 32 faceted garnets of vivid red hues glisten in all manners of lighting and present a truly enchanting and classical appearance.

Whilst exceptionally elegant, it is also versatile and in a sense perhaps quite practically "modern" as the gemstones are all uniform and are the highlight of its design, somewhat akin to contemporary jewels. This may allow for it to be worn in a wide variety of ways aside from a classical appearance, for instance, pairing with a light summery blouse or perhaps around a turtleneck in winter.

Each garnet has been meticulously set with a foil backed setting, commonly found in Georgian period jewellery to enhance its vividness and reflective nature. Such a design allows for the necklace to move freely upon wearing and reflects the light in all angles no matter where it is viewed from.

What is particularly delightful about this example is the fine gold setting - whilst perhaps overlooked upon a quick glance, the front facing mount is incredibly thin and fine even compared to similar counterpart examples of the period which may have a more 'chunky' or overlapping mount. This enhances and maximises the garnet's surface area which can be seen and as a whole, makes a stunning impression as if the garnets are almost holographic or floating around the wearer.

The reverse side features a fully solid 9ct gold backing through with a lovely antique gold tone and each fine link is a testament to its quality craftsmanship of the period. Another point of intricacy is the clasp which is hidden within the design with a fine mechanism and a garnet on top for uniformity.

Distinguished in style and unapologetically elegant, this pieces makes for an ideal addition for the discerning antique jewellery lover and a conversation starter upon wearing.

Garnet is known to be the birthstone for January.

The pendant is marked on the clasp with a 9ct stamp.

All of our jewellery comes with a complimentary hard shell gift box.
