The Georgian era, spanning the reigns of the four King Georges from 1714 to 1830, is characterised by classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and a transition from ornate rococo designs to cleaner neoclassical lines.

These pieces are typically fashioned from sterling silver, often featuring hand-engraved crests and parcel-gilt bowls, a technique where gold wash is applied to the interior of the spoon bowl.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmark stamps, including a lion passant for sterling standard, a leopards head for London assay, a date letter, and a makers mark, alongside characteristic weight and hand-finished details.

Displaying historical silverware in a traditional wooden cutlery chest or mounted in a shallow shadow box brings historic texture and refined metallic accents to a contemporary dining room.

Preserve silver items by storing them in tarnish-resistant flannel cloths, avoiding harsh chemical dips, and cleaning infrequently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialist silver polish.
