FAQs

Match strikers modelled as golf balls became popular in the late 19th century alongside the rise of golf as a fashionable leisure sport, often combining novelty ceramics with silver mounts for smoking rooms.

These items typically combined glazed or unglazed ceramic bodies designed to strike safety matches, fitted with hallmarked sterling silver rims and shields.

Authentic pieces feature crisp hallmarks on the silver mounts indicating the assay office, date letter, and makers mark, alongside period-appropriate ceramic ageing and wear.

This piece can be placed on a desk or mantelpiece as a decorative curiosity, adding a touch of historical character and sporting heritage to a contemporary room.

Clean the ceramic body gently with a soft, damp cloth and use a specialist silver polish on the metal mount while avoiding direct contact with the ceramic surface.
