This set of four Georgian dessert plates originates from the Leeds pottery around 1800. Manufactured from pearlware earthenware with a lustrous lead glaze, the plates display a rich blue and white colour palette using cobalt pigment under the glaze. Each circular piece features a scalloped rim framing a detailed transfer-printed Chinoiserie landscape with traditional Chinese buildings, trees, a bridge, and a sailing boat, enclosed by an intricate geometric border. The backs show minor marks from historic plate hangers, while the surfaces remain in good condition. Measuring 24 cm in diameter, these antique plates offer practical utility as well as decorative charm for display on a dining room sideboard top. They bring an authentic English Country House aesthetic to a traditional or contemporary table setting, suitable for serving individual desserts or functioning as decorative wall and cabinet accents.

FAQs

Transferware is earthenware decorated using a copper-plate printing process that transfers patterns onto ceramic surfaces prior to glazing. Popularised in late 18th and early 19th-century Britain, these pieces frequently featured Chinoiserie landscapes inspired by imported Chinese porcelain.

Leeds Pottery typically utilised earthenware or pearlware bodies coated with a clear lead glaze over cobalt blue underglaze decoration. The cobalt pigment tolerated high firing temperatures, ensuring printed designs remained sharp beneath the protective glaze.

Authentic pieces from this period often display subtle irregularities in the transfer pattern seam, unglazed foot rims, and light crazing within the lead glaze. Impressed maker marks or painted factory symbols on the underside also assist in verifying authenticity.

Plates can be mounted as a curated gallery wall in a dining room or displayed upright on wooden plate racks and sideboard tops. Displaying blue and white ceramics against neutral backdrops or dark natural timber provides clear visual contrast.

Hand-wash earthenware using warm water and mild liquid detergent, avoiding abrasive pads or long immersion in standing water. Keep historic ceramics out of dishwashers and microwaves to prevent glaze deterioration and thermal shock fractures.
