Antique Afghan Baluch Kilim in Bands of Weftwork Decoration, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 8ft 2in x 3ft 10in (250 x 116cm).

Old Afghan Baluch kilim with banded design in weft work.

Circa 1900.

This is a good example of a Baluch kilim with bands of weft work, each band is of a different design, the colours are excellent with good dye quality. There is soft madder red, shades of indigo blue, green and aubergine.

Excellent original condition with slight wear, there are a few small old repairs. I feel that this could be one half of a two part kilim.

This kilim is suitable for normal domestic use.

Stock Number: D-1055.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baluch kilims were handwoven by nomadic and semi-nomadic Baluch tribes operating across Persia and Afghanistan. They are distinct for their long, narrow formats, rich dark palette dominated by madder reds and deep blues, and intricate supplementary floating weftwork geometric designs.

These textiles are traditionally hand-spun using natural wool for both warp and weft, often incorporating goat hair side finishes. The structural technique combines slit-weave flatweaving with extra-weft brocading to produce raised geometric patterns.

Authentic historic Baluch kilims exhibit hand-spun wool irregularities, natural vegetable dye tonal shifts known as abrash, and complex brocaded bands. They also typically feature distinctive tribal side-selvedge wrapping and end-finish web motifs.

A Baluch flatweave runner provides warmth and geometric structure when laid in hallways, gallery spaces, or alongside modern oak or leather furniture. Its rich tones complement minimalist, industrial, or bohemian interior schemes.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush bar to protect floating wefts. Clean spills immediately with clean water and neutral detergent, and enlist specialist rug restorers for periodic professional cleaning.
