Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First appearing in the late 18th century, toast racks were created to keep toasted bread upright, allowing steam to escape so slices remained crisp during breakfast service. Over the 19th and early 20th centuries, silversmiths designed these functional items in various decorative forms, including arch, gothic, and novelty shapes like wishbones.

High-quality antique toast racks were typically constructed from solid sterling silver or silver plate. The individual vertical dividers were hand-soldered to a wirework or cast base frame, which was supported by feet such as spherical, bracket, or button style, and topped with a loop handle for carrying.

Authentic British sterling silver features a complete set of hallmarks struck into the metal. These include the town mark (such as a crown for Sheffield or anchor for Birmingham), the lion passant for sterling purity, a date letter, and a makers mark indicating the workshop.

Beyond breakfast table settings, antique toast racks are often repurposed on desks or sideboards to hold letters, stationery, or business cards. They can also be integrated into dining vignettes on a dresser, sideboard, or bar cart as decorative hollowware.

Clean sterling silver using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive pads that could scratch the finish. Hand washing with mild soapy water and drying thoroughly after use prevents tarnishing and retains the original patina.
