Antique Half-saddlebag Face, Afshar Nomads of Aqta', Kerman Province, South Persia.

Description

This beautiful bag-face is an early example of Afshar work, dating to circa 1870 from Aqta' in the province of Kerman, south Persia. The golden-yellow main border is very interesting and one needs to look closely to see the depiction of two birds, opposing each other on either side of a stylised 'tree of life' on the top and bottom borders and on the side borders, camels opposing each other. These are popular symbols amongst the Afshar tribes. The field design seems to comprise a highly stylised lotus blossom amid vegetal patterns embellished with geometrical motifs but it might also stem from the open-winged eagle - an ancient Persian motif. Once part of a double saddle-bag, this face is all that remains. The superb, vegetable-dye colours are beautifully saturated and it is in very good pile all over.

An Afshar saddlebag face, traditionally known as a khorjin face, is the decorative woven front panel of a double cargo bag made by nomadic Afshar tribes in southern Persia. These textiles were used on pack animals to transport goods and household belongings.

Afshar textiles are hand-woven using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. The yarns are dyed using natural vegetable and mineral dyes, resulting in rich navy, terracotta, yellow, and ivory shades.

Authentic Afshar pieces feature flexible wool foundations, asymmetrical or symmetrical hand-tied knots, and distinct geometric motifs such as stepped diamonds, botteh designs, or stylized florals. Variations in dye colour, known as abrash, also indicate hand-dyed wool construction.

A saddlebag face can be mounted and framed as wall art, draped over a table or sideboard surface, or upholstered into a custom accent cushion to introduce pattern and texture into a room.
