Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The porcelain is delicately hand painted with the plumage left as the bright white ceramic. The piece has the impressed mark of EBS for the highly regarded porcelain factory in Germany of Ernst Bohne Soehne, this impressed mark was used around 1880. The very large size of owl and the high-quality manufacture are unusual for these lamp bases. The piece retains the lamp fitting but it has been altered for electricity and would need rewiring to be used as a lamp. The porcelain is in excellent condition only a small hairline on the underside of the base. The owl is a hugely decorative, high-quality piece, an excellent example of late nineteenth century porcelain.
