Large 19th Century English Giltwood Country House Sofa

19th century
Description

Large 19th Century English Country House Giltwood Sofa.

This unusual sofa is executed in giltwood and was made in the middle of the 19th century. Aspects of the design are in the antiquarian taste, popular during this period, and the ornament combines gothic detailing such as the capitals on the legs and the spandrel brackets, with Elizabethan revivalism such as the rose motifs. It is of large scale and has real presence but it is not overly ornate and is very tastefully designed, clearly by an architect or designer of great skill.

A lovely and unusual piece that has been upholstered to an under-finish, ready for the client's choice of fabric.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large 19th-century English country house sofa is made of giltwood and upholstered in buff hessian. The design includes gothic detailing, rose motifs, carved finials atop the upright posts, fluted turned legs terminating in brass castors, and a tufted backrest with two rows of buttons. The gold frame displays visible grain and subtle distressing, while the neutral fabric shows a coarse woven texture. It measures 114 cm high, 197 cm wide, and 80 cm deep. Today, this settee serves as a statement seating piece in a drawing room, large living room, or reception hallway. Placed against a wall, it provides generous seating for multiple guests while complementing traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

FAQs

A 19th-century giltwood sofa is a formal seating piece constructed with a wooden frame coated in gesso and finished with thin layers of gold leaf, popular in British and European grand residences.

These pieces traditionally feature hand-carved timber frames, gesso undercoats, gold leaf gilding, and traditional upholstery composed of webbed bases, horsehair padding, and natural fibre fabrics.

Authentic 19th-century giltwood exhibits natural surface wear showing underlying red or grey bole, hand-carved joinery details, period castors, and minor natural age-related cracks in the gesso layer.

A giltwood sofa can be styled as a focal point against neutral walls, paired with modern artwork or minimal contemporary accents to balance the intricate gilded frame.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted lightly using a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or polishing chemicals that can dissolve the delicate gold leaf.
