These items typically combine hand-blown or mould-blown glass liners with pierced, stamped, or cast sterling silver holders. The silver frames often feature decorative borders, reticulated galleries, and hallmarks indicating the metal purity and maker, while the glass inserts are custom-fitted to the metal framework.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit clear makers marks, purity stamps such as Sterling, and minor surface inconsistencies indicative of traditional hand-working methods. The glass should show characteristic age-related wear, such as subtle base scratching or tiny bubbles within the matrix, distinguishing them from modern reproductions.

These small decorative pieces can be utilised as sophisticated display objects on a sideboard or mantelpiece, or repurposed to hold small items such as rings on a dressing table. Their rich colour and metallic sheen add a layer of historic texture and refinement to contemporary table settings.

Sterling silver should be cleaned periodically with a non-abrasive silver polish to maintain its lustre without damaging delicate details. Glass liners should be washed gently in warm, soapy water and dried thoroughly, avoiding harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners that might compromise the material integrity.

Cranberry glass, characterised by its distinctive pinkish-red hue created by adding gold chloride to the molten glass batch, became highly fashionable during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Paired with sterling silver mounts or pierced frames, open salt cellars were staple items on formal dining tables for holding granulated or crystal salt before the invention of free-flowing table salt.
