Antique scent and cologne bottles mounted in silver or silver gilt were essential dressing table accessories popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Makers such as Sampson Morden produced intricate pieces that reflected the refined craftsmanship of the era.

These pieces typically combine heavy-lead cut crystal or blown glass bodies with hallmarked sterling silver mounts, often finished with a gilt wash known as silver gilt or vermeil. Screw caps or hinged lids frequently feature detailed repousse, chasing, or engrave work.

Authenticity is usually verified through clear makers marks, such as the SM stamp for Sampson Morden, alongside standard silver hallmarks indicating the assay office, standard of purity, and date letter. The hand-cut facets on the crystal and the weight of the metal are also key indicators of period manufacture.

These small collectables add a touch of historic metallic sheen and texture when displayed on a mirrored tray, marble countertop, or within a glass-fronted cabinet alongside other small objects of curiosity.

Clean the glass body gently with warm soapy water using a soft brush, avoiding harsh chemicals that could damage the delicate silver gilt mount. Store away from direct sunlight and humidity to preserve the metal finish.
