Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Davenport desk was first commissioned in the late eighteenth century from the English cabinetmaking firm Gillows of Lancaster for a Captain Davenport. Its distinctive compact, sloped-top silhouette with side-access drawers was engineered specifically for space efficiency aboard ships and in small study areas.

High-end nineteenth-century Davenport desks typically feature figure-rich timber veneers such as amboyna, walnut, or rosewood over solid pine or oak carcases. They frequently incorporate hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass gallery rails, castors, and turned support columns.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, original cast iron or brass castors, period-correct locks, and secondary woods like oak or pine inside the drawers. Authentic wear patterns on the writing slope and natural patina on the timber surfaces also distinguish historical pieces from modern reproductions.

A Davenport desk functions well as an occasional writing workstation in a home office, hallway, or living room alcove. Its compact footprint permits placement against narrow walls or within small reading nooks where traditional pedestal desks cannot fit.

Amboyna veneer should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking and fading. Clean the surface with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the grain twice a year to preserve the wood moisture and finish.
