This Victorian Davenport desk dates from circa 1870 and follows a gentleman's library style. The piece uses black ebony wood paired with warm brown amboyna crossbanding, alongside a gilt-tooled red leather writing slope, flush brass recessed hardware, and a sled base fitted with castors. A stepped stationery box sits atop the slanted lid, while the side cabinet door swings open on hinges to display four internal drawers with bird's-eye maple fronts and small metal pull handles. Measuring 89 cm high by 57 cm wide and 57 cm deep, the compact desk suits placement in a study, home office, or living room as a practical writing station and storage cabinet. The interior contains mahogany-lined drawers, and working locks with keys secure the compartments. The construction incorporates polished wooden surfaces with contrasting dark and pale grain patterns, clean mouldings around the base and sides, and curved scrolled feet.

A Davenport desk is a compact writing desk featuring a sloped top, an integrated stationery compartment, and a lateral bank of drawers enclosed by a side door or left exposed.

Victorian Davenport desks were frequently crafted from solid hardwoods like oak, mahogany, or walnut, often decorated with ebonised finishes, brass hardware, and exotic wood veneers such as amboyna or burr walnut.

Authentic 19th-century Davenport desks typically display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, period brass castors, genuine leather-lined writing slopes, and original keyholes or flush campaign-style brass handles.

Due to its compact footprint, a Davenport desk functions well as a dedicated correspondence station in a hallway, home office, or living room alcove, pairing easily with modern or classic seating.

Ebonised surfaces and exotic veneers should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying neutral microcrystalline wax sparingly.
