This nineteenth-century French Louis XVI revival bonheur de jour combines satinwood, rosewood, amboyna, ormolu, and a porcelain portrait plaque in a golden-brown finish. The piece consists of a removable top section with a central cupboard door set with a hand-painted porcelain plaque depicting a woman in a purple garment, enclosed by a ribbon-tied ormolu frame, flanked by side cabinets with hanging floral gilt-bronze mounts and vertical fluted mouldings. Below sits a writing desk with a pull-out writing slide, a drawer front decorated with a Greek key inlay pattern, and a marquetry centre. The underframe features turned legs embellished with gilt-bronze foliate mounts, leading down to a lower stretcher shelf supported by shaped feet. Gilt-bronze egg-and-dart mouldings edge the table top. The item stands 128.3 cm high, 73.6 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, making it a functional writing station for a study, drawing room, or hallway. The compact proportions allow placement against a living room wall or within a bedroom as a dedicated writing space.

A bonheur de jour is a French ladys writing desk introduced in Paris during the eighteenth century. It features a compact writing surface integrated with an elevated back section containing small drawers or cabinets.

These pieces were crafted using exotic timber veneers including satinwood, rosewood, and amboyna. Decorative elements frequently incorporate cast gilt-bronze ormolu mounts and hand-painted porcelain plaques.

Period examples display precise hand-cut marquetry, thick wood veneers, and gilt-bronze fittings attached with single-slot screws. Porcelain elements were painted by hand rather than produced via mechanical transfer methods.

Position the cabinet as an accent writing table in a dressing room, study, or hallway alongside simple contemporary seating. Subtle directional lighting helps highlight the detail of the metalwork and wood grain without overpowering surrounding decor.

Dust wooden surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax lightly along the grain to preserve the timber finish. Clean gilt-bronze mounts using a dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals that could alter the patination or damage adjacent wood veneers.
