FAQs

Electroplate on copper involves depositing a thin layer of silver onto a base metal core such as copper, popularised during the 19th and early 20th centuries as a cost-effective alternative to solid silver.

These pieces were typically constructed from a base metal core, such as copper or brass, coated in a layer of silver via electroplating, and finished with hand-chased or stamped decorative borders.

Authenticity is generally verified through maker marks, hallmark stamps indicating electroplate on copper (EPOC), and signs of natural patination or wear where the base metal shows through the silver layer.

An ornate metal tray can be used on a coffee table or sideboard to anchor decorative groupings, such as glassware, crystal decanters, or seasonal candles, adding metallic texture to the scheme.

Maintenance requires gentle cleaning with a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth to prevent damage to the thin electroplated silver layer.
