Founded by Thomas Roberts in premises further down South Street (later to be renamed The Moor.) Thomas Roberts, draper, Nos. 48 and 50 South Street, Moor. (1862 Whites Directory). The business expanded and by 1879 Directory in partnership as T & J. Roberts, drapers, hosier, silk mercers and house furnishers, Nos. 44 & 52 & furniture dealers, Nos. 61-3 South Street, Moor.
They established new premises at Moorhead 1882

John Roberts died 8th May 1891 and Thomas died 1st July 1893, his second son Thomas Harland Roberts took over the business.
September 1896 there was a split in the family business when brothers Charles and John Arnold, sons of John Roberts decided to set up in business on their own account as Roberts Brothers (more in the following post) Both businesses thriving and expanding.
