Description

The term 'Armanibaff' is a misnomer as it is often used to describe Bakhtiar village rugs woven by Armenians living in the Bakhtiar environs. Nevertheless, it generally suggests a fine quality rug with other technical characteristics such as a woolen foundation. Indeed this rug, has wefts of wool and cotton mixed. The weave is fine with non-depressed cotton warps. Otherwise the design is very recognisable as Bakhtiar. The classic 'Heshti' design of square panels decorated with plant forms has been beautifully drawn. But it is the border which sets this rug off as special. The impressionistic drawing of the roses or 'gol farang' is very striking and is in contrast to the rigid design of the field. Excellent natural dyes have been used to create a vivid and joyful rug. Cherished through the generations, it has survived in excellent condition. Professionally cleaned.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Persian Bakhtiar Rug to the 1890s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Bakhtiar rugs originate from the Bakhtiari tribe of western Persia and are historically renowned for their sturdy construction and distinctive geometric or garden compartment designs known as the khesht motif.

Authentic antique Bakhtiar rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, dyed using natural vegetable and mineral colourants.

Authentication involves examining the irregular hand-knotted fringe, natural colour variation or abris in the wool, the tightness of the weave on the reverse, and traditional motifs such as stylised vases, trees, and garden panels.

An antique Bakhtiar rug grounds contemporary spaces by adding rich texture, historic character, and a vibrant focal point when paired with minimalist or mid-century furniture.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialised cleaning when necessary, rotation to ensure even wear, and protection from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
